Soccer (Football)

Soccer (called football almost everywhere except the United States) is by far the world’s most popular sport — a global language spoken by approximately 3.5 billion fans. You can go almost anywhere on Earth and discuss football.

The Basics

Football is played between two teams of 11 players each on a large grass (or artificial turf) field. The objective is to score more goals than the opposing team by putting the ball into the opponent’s goal — a rectangular frame with a net at each end of the field.

Key rule: Except for the goalkeeper (and for specific situations like throw-ins), players may not use their hands or arms to touch the ball. The game is played with the feet, chest, and head.

How the Game Works

  • Two halves of 45 minutes each (plus added injury time at the end of each half)
  • No timeouts; the game flows continuously
  • The team with more goals at the end of 90 minutes wins
  • If tied: in competitions, may go to extra time (30 more minutes) then penalty shootout (each team takes turns shooting at goal from the penalty spot — high drama)

Basic Rules

  • Offside — a player cannot receive the ball if they are closer to the opponent’s goal than both the ball and the second-to-last defender when the ball is played to them. One of the more confusing rules; VAR (video review) now assists.
  • Foul — illegal tackle or use of hands; results in a free kick for the opposing team
  • Yellow card — caution; two yellow cards in the same match = red card
  • Red card — ejection; the player’s team continues with 10 players
  • Penalty kick — awarded when a foul occurs inside the penalty area; one player shoots from 12 yards against only the goalkeeper

Positions

  • Goalkeeper (GK) — the only player who can use hands (inside their own penalty area); defends the goal
  • Defenders — protect their own goal; often 4 across the back
  • Midfielders — link defense and attack; control possession
  • Forwards / Strikers — score goals; press the opponent’s defense

Major Competitions

Club Football

  • Premier League — English top division; most watched league globally (Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea)
