Combat Sports

Combat sports are athletic competitions in which two individuals compete using physical force — striking, grappling, or both. They are among humanity’s oldest sports, with roots in ancient Greece and cultures worldwide.

Boxing

Two fighters stand in a ring and try to hit each other with padded gloves — above the belt only. The goal is to score more points or knock your opponent out (KO).

  • Fights are divided into rounds (3 minutes each; up to 12 for championships)
  • KO — opponent is knocked down and cannot rise in 10 seconds
  • TKO — referee stops the fight for safety
  • Decision — judges score if no KO/TKO; fighter with more rounds wins

Legendary Boxers:

  • Muhammad Ali — “The Greatest”; heavyweight champion 3 times; also famous for wit, activism, and refusing military service on principle
  • Mike Tyson — dominated the late 1980s; one of the most feared fighters ever
  • Floyd Mayweather Jr. — undefeated; 50–0 record; brilliant defensive boxer
  • Manny Pacquiao — the only 8-division world champion; also a Philippine senator
  • Canelo Álvarez — current pound-for-pound king; Mexican national hero

MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)

MMA combines striking (punching, kicking, elbows, knees) with grappling (wrestling, jiu-jitsu). Fights take place in an octagon — an eight-sided cage.

Ways to win:

  • KO/TKO — knocked out or referee stops fight
  • Submission — opponent taps out when caught in a joint lock or choke
  • Decision — judges score the rounds

The UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) is the dominant MMA organization globally.

Disciplines in MMA: Wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, Judo/Sambo

Legendary MMA Fighters:

  • Jon Jones — widely considered the GOAT; light heavyweight and heavyweight champion
  • Khabib Nurmagomedov — undefeated; Dagestani; dominant wrestler; retired 29–0
  • Conor McGregor — Irish; explosive; first to hold two UFC titles simultaneously
  • Ronda Rousey — pioneered women’s MMA; first female UFC champion
