Basketball

Basketball is one of the most widely played and watched sports in the world, invented in the United States and now globally popular. Understanding it will open enormous amounts of social conversation, particularly in American contexts.

The Basics

Basketball is played between two teams of 5 players each on a rectangular court. The objective is to score more points than the opposing team by throwing a ball through a raised hoop (the basket) — located 10 feet (3.05 meters) above the floor at each end of the court.

How Points Are Scored

Shot TypePoints
Regular field goal (inside the 3-point line)2 points
Three-pointer (outside the arc)3 points
Free throw (awarded after certain fouls)1 point

Basic Rules

  • Dribbling — to move with the ball, a player must continuously bounce it on the floor. You cannot run holding the ball (this is called “traveling” — a violation).
  • 24-second shot clock (NBA) — the offense must attempt a shot within 24 seconds or the ball is turned over
  • Out of bounds — if the ball (or a player holding it) touches the sideline or baseline, possession changes
  • Fouls — illegal physical contact. Excessive fouls (6 in the NBA) result in “fouling out” (being removed from the game)

The Court

  • The court is 28 meters long and 15 meters wide (NBA regulation)
  • Key areas:
    • Paint/Lane — the rectangular area under each basket; centers compete here
    • Three-point line — arc beyond which shots are worth 3 points
    • Free throw line — line where players shoot free throws
    • Half-court line — divides the court; the ball must cross it within 8 seconds after a change of possession
