How Your Body Works

The human body is a remarkably complex biological machine. It runs automatically for the most part, but requires certain inputs to keep functioning.

The Major Systems

πŸ«€ Cardiovascular System

The heart pumps blood through a network of vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries). Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to all cells and removes waste. The heart beats ~60–100 times per minute, every minute, for your entire life without you thinking about it.

🫁 Respiratory System

The lungs take in oxygen from air and expel carbon dioxide. Humans breathe ~15–20 times per minute. You cannot hold your breath indefinitely β€” the brain will override you.

🧠 Nervous System

The brain and spinal cord form the central nervous system. The brain processes information, generates thoughts and emotions, and sends signals to the rest of the body. It is extraordinarily complex β€” the most complex object in the known universe by many estimates.

🍽️ Digestive System

Food enters through the mouth, travels down the esophagus, into the stomach (where acids break it down), through the small intestine (nutrients absorbed), through the large intestine (water absorbed), and exits as waste. This takes 24–72 hours.

🦴 Skeletal & Muscular Systems

206 bones provide structure and protect organs. Over 600 muscles attached to bones allow movement. These work together to let humans walk, run, carry, and gesture.

πŸ›‘οΈ Immune System

A complex network of cells and proteins that fights off pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi). When it encounters something unfamiliar, it may cause symptoms like fever, inflammation, or fatigue while it fights back.

🧬 Endocrine System

Glands produce hormones β€” chemical messengers that regulate mood, growth, reproduction, metabolism, and more. Includes the thyroid, adrenal glands, and pancreas.

Basic Needs

The body requires these inputs to survive:

NeedDetails
AirMust breathe continuously. Cannot survive more than ~3-5 minutes without oxygen.
WaterMust drink ~2–3 liters per day. Cannot survive more than ~3 days without water.
FoodMust eat regularly. Cannot survive more than ~3 weeks without food.
SleepMust sleep ~7–9 hours out of every 24. (Sleep)
Temperature regulationBody must stay near 37Β°C (98.6Β°F). Too hot or cold = dangerous.

Senses

Humans perceive the world through five primary senses:

  1. Sight β€” processed by eyes; provides the majority of environmental information
  2. Hearing β€” processed by ears; also used for balance
  3. Touch β€” sensors throughout skin detect pressure, temperature, pain
  4. Taste β€” detects sweet, salty, sour, bitter, umami (savory)
  5. Smell β€” closely linked to taste and memory

Pain and Emotions

The body signals problems through pain β€” an unpleasant sensation indicating something needs attention. Never ignore persistent pain.

The body also generates emotions β€” complex biochemical states that influence behavior (see Ethics & Morality and Mental Health & Happiness).

The Body’s Limits

Humans can be injured and become ill. Medicine is the field dedicated to maintaining and restoring health. When something goes wrong, humans seek doctors β€” trained medical professionals. Do not attempt to self-treat serious problems.
