Geography & Countries
Earth’s land surface is divided into political units called countries (also called nations or states). There are approximately 195 recognized countries as of 2024.
What is a Country?
A country is a defined geographic territory with:
- Its own government (a system for making rules and decisions)
- Recognized borders (agreed-upon edges of its territory)
- A population of citizens
- Usually its own currency, laws, and military
Countries vary enormously in size, population, wealth, and power.
Major Regions of the World
North America
Dominated by the United States (a wealthy, powerful democracy), Canada (similar but quieter about it), and Mexico. The US is the world’s largest economy and has significant cultural influence globally through film, music, and technology.
South America
Home to Brazil (the largest country by size and population in the region), Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and others. Predominantly Spanish-speaking (Brazil speaks Portuguese). Rich in natural resources; incredible biodiversity.
Europe
A relatively small continent with enormous historical influence. Home to countries like Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, and ~40 others. Many are grouped in a political/economic alliance called the European Union (EU).
Africa
The second-largest continent. 54 countries, massive diversity of languages, cultures, and ecosystems. Includes Nigeria (most populous country in Africa), South Africa, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, and many more. Historically exploited by European powers (this is still felt today).
Asia
The largest continent. Home to China (largest population until recently), India (now #1), Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Russia (spans both Europe and Asia), and many more. Enormous cultural diversity.
Oceania
Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and hundreds of Pacific island nations.
Borders and Conflict
Humans have fought enormous numbers of wars over borders, territory, and control of land. Many current borders were drawn by colonial powers without regard for the people already living there — this created tensions that persist today.
Not all borders are peaceful. Some are disputed. Some are heavily militarized. Approach border areas with awareness.
Languages by Region
🚩 Language varies enormously:
- English is the most widely used international language (for business, diplomacy, and the internet)
- Mandarin Chinese has the most native speakers
- Spanish is widely spoken across Latin America and Spain
- Arabic, Hindi, French, Portuguese, Russian, and hundreds more are spoken by millions
See The Major Languages for more detail.
Maps and Navigation
Humans represent their geography on maps — flat or digital representations of the curved Earth. You’ll encounter:
- Physical maps — show terrain (mountains, rivers)
- Political maps — show borders and countries
- GPS/digital maps — live navigation tools on smartphones (Smartphones)
Cardinal directions: North, South, East, West. The Sun rises in the East and sets in the West — this gives you your bearings during the day.
